Sigma fp-L flip screen mod

I added a flip screen to the Sigma fp-L using a modification kit called the DPL mod.

The fp-L is easily my favourite camera to date. It’s built around a minimalist design philosophy, which is part of its appeal but that simplicity does come at the cost of usability in certain scenarios.

This mod is designed to address that.

Installation Experience

Installation is relatively straightforward, but not something I’d call easy. You’re opening up the camera, working with delicate ribbon cables, and relying on pressure based contacts. Tolerances are tight, and there’s very little room for error.

I learned that the hard way.

While removing the screen, I applied too much alcohol. A small amount seeped under the LCD and damaged a section of pixels in the upper right corner. The result looks like a faint smudge. It’s subtle enough that most people would probably ignore it…..but I can’t.

I’ve since sourced a replacement screen from a third party supplier, so that’s on the way. Lesson learned.

First Impressions

Once installed, the difference is immediate. It genuinely transforms the camera.

The flip mechanism works well. Out of the box it feels a bit stiff, but I expect it to loosen slightly with use.

The included sunhood was an unexpected highlight. I didn’t think much of it initially, but it’s actually very practical in bright conditions.

Build Quality

There’s always an inherent risk with mods like this, especially after my experience during installation. That said, the design is thoughtful and the materials feel solid.

Importantly, it doesn’t feel like a DIY hack. It feels like something Sigma could have shipped themselves. In all seriousness its a shame they didn’t.

Final Thoughts

For me, this mod shifts the fp-L from being a highly specialised tool to something far more versatile and usable day to day.

I’m looking forward to putting it through its paces and will share a follow up once I’ve spent more time shooting with it.
